Stance and Punches: How Proper Positioning Builds Real Power

Your stance isn’t just about being ready to move, it’s the foundation that allows you to generate real power in your punches. Think about trying to throw a ball while standing perfectly square and rigid.

Now think about the natural rotation your body wants to use to throw it farther. Your stance in striking works the same way, it needs to allow your body weight to contribute to the strike through rotation.

When you’re throwing your cross (your “2”), your back foot should be able to pivot naturally as your hip rotates forward. If your stance is too wide or too narrow, you’ll find yourself either falling forward or unable to rotate fully.

Similarly, when throwing your lead hook, your front foot needs to be able to pivot as your lead hip rotates through the punch. Without this ability to pivot and rotate built into your stance, you’re relying purely on arm strength instead of letting your whole body contribute to the power of the strike.

Check yourself: can you pivot both feet without picking them up? Can you rotate your hips fully without losing your balance? If not, you might need to adjust your stance width or weight distribution.
