What Actually Happens in a FightFit Session
Every session is different because every client is different. That’s the key point to remember.
What we do depends on the person we’re training, their experience, their goals and what we’re working on together. Having said that, very broadly speaking, a session might look something like this:
Warm Up
We start with a range of Muay Thai and MMA-specific movements, beginning with large muscle groups and alternating exercises that warm and stretch the areas that get the most use. That often means the hips, calves, shoulders and core. The goal is to get your body ready for the type of movement you’ll actually be doing during the session.
Technique and Technique Pads
From there, we might work with bands, shadowboxing, exercises and pads to get a close look at a particular technique. Early on, we’re often covering the details of punches and clinch knees, along with basic stance, hip movement and foot movement. This gives us time to break down the technique before adding more speed, power or complexity.
Heavy Pad Work
We also make sure to get higher-rep and higher-power pad work in. The focus here is on integrating new technique into things we’ve worked on in the past. Instead of treating each technique as something isolated, we’re gradually putting the pieces together.
Drilling and Sparring
Then we put on gloves. We might break down the technique we looked at earlier in the session, or something adjacent to it, and practice applying it in a more realistic setting. The goal is to move toward being able to recognize the situation and actually use the technique in sparring. Sparring is always controlled - no one can improve if they’re getting hurt, so we make sure no one gets hurt.
Conditioning and Stretching
Depending on the client’s conditioning goals or problem areas, we might work on strength, peak cardio, agility, striking endurance or a combination of these and other aspects of generally improving the body. We also take time to stretch and cool down.
Every Client Is Different
These aren’t five boxes that every session has to check. The important part is that the training changes depending on the person. One client may need more time on technique, another may have different conditioning goals, and another may be ready to spend more time applying what they’ve learned. That’s why the first point matters so much: every session is different because every client is different.
